Braga is not just a student city, a tourist city or a cannabis city. I noticed the difference depending on where I was walking. Around the historic centre, the streets were busier with visitors and people moving between the squares. Not really, especially if you are a stranger looking for weed in Braga. I found that out one evening while walking around Gualtar during term time. I got talking to a student and asked if I could get weed around there. He shook his head and told me it was not possible for strangers.

That short conversation made more sense of what I was seeing around the University of Minho. There were students everywhere, people heading between campus and shared flats, groups hanging around and plenty going on after lectures. Cannabis was certainly around, but it did not feel like something being offered to anyone who happened to walk through.

I noticed more of a difference when the university was busy. More students meant more groups, more evenings out and more chances to catch the smell of weed in Braga. When the campus quietened down, that whole side of the city felt much less active.

The student I spoke to also made one thing pretty clear: seeing cannabis around a university does not mean you can simply approach people and expect them to sell it to you. Gualtar felt much more like a place where people already knew each other. If you were outside those circles, you could walk around for quite a while without finding anything.

Will I See People Smoking Weed Around Bom Jesus in Braga?

Probably not. I’ve climbed the long Baroque staircase at Bom Jesus and walked through the gardens above Braga enough times to understand why the question comes up. You get higher above the city, the views open out, and the trees and paths make parts of the hillside feel much quieter than the centre. But I never saw people openly smoking weed here.

Bom Jesus is still a busy visitor site. Pilgrims, tourists and local visitors move between the staircase, church, gardens and viewpoints throughout the day. The gives a good feel for the sanctuary, gardens and walking routes. Even when I found a quieter stretch of the hillside, someone was usually coming up the path or stopping nearby to take a photo.

The trees and winding paths can make some corners feel tucked away, which is probably why the idea of smoking weed in Braga here comes up. But that feeling changes quickly when another group comes around the corner. Families, tour groups and people visiting the sanctuary all share the same paths, so using cannabis in Braga here would still be pretty noticeable.

I also noticed that the view can make the whole place feel more private than it actually is. You climb above the city, look back across Braga and get that feeling of being somewhere completely separate. Then you hear footsteps behind you and remember how many people are using the hill at the same time.

During the day, I came across families, joggers and people just out for a walk. Later on, more people use the park to sit around and unwind. Smoking cannabis in Braga can therefore feel less noticeable here than on a busy street simply because there is more space.

But the open space works both ways. You might have more room around you, yet people can still see what is happening on the grass or along the paths. I never got the impression that the park was somewhere people openly smoked weed in Braga without thinking about who was nearby.
